HMS Intrepid recycling project completed
Dismantling started in December 2008 at the rear of the ship and this huge recycling project began. Using two 30 tonne excavators fitted with shears, work slowly progressed through the layers of steel revealing the decks inside. Bit by bit, layer by layer, the heart of the ship built over 40 years ago, was taken apart.
Pieces the size of a large family car were bitten off and tossed to the floor ready for sorting. Amongst the piles of twisted metal were thousands of tons of Steel, Iron and Copper, all of which were to be sorted and separated before they could be sent off for recycling.

The final metal and remaining debris has now been cleared, the machines lifted out of the dock, and tomorrow the dock will be inspected by the Environment Agency to ensure full compliance with the latest recycling standards and to prove that the site has been returned to its former state. Next week the dock will be filled back up with millions of gallons of water ready for the next project to arrive……
